12/14/1998
PITTSBURGH - Jeremiah Heath, a freshman swimmer at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named the SPEEDO/National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) High School Swimmer of the Year for the state of Colorado.
The award, sponsored by SPEEDO America and NISCA, is annually presented to the top male and female high school swimmers from each state.
Heath, a native of Estes Park, Colo., was honored for his accomplishments at Estes Park High during the 1997-98 season. During his high school career, he captured four state championships in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.
Heath has made an immediate impact during his freshman season at Pittsburgh. He has been a major contributor as a member of the Panthers' 200-yard freestyle relay team, which earned national rankings this season with a time of 1:23.08.
"Miah, in my opinion, has one of the highest potentials of any swimmer we have ever recruited," said Head Coach Chuck Knoles. "He has a tremendous background in stroke technique and with his size and strength, I think he will be able to go as far as he wants in Division I swimming."
Additionally, Heath has contributed in the 800- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams which have recorded the team's best (6:57.35) and second-best (3:05.77) times of the season, respectively.
