Women's Soccer Shuts Out Old Dominion, 3-0
10/17/1999
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh women's soccer team claimed a 3-0 shutout victory over Old Dominion today at Morton Field. Freshman forward Kirstin Gellatly, who leads the team in scoring with 15 points, scored two goals for the Panthers.
Nothing could get past Pittsburgh goalkeeper Nicole Bashor (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) as she stopped 13 of the Monarchs' 23 shots on goal, including all nine Old Dominion shots in the first half. Bashor, who was making her first starting appearance after a five- game hiatus, was credited with her third shutout of the season.
Gellatly (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) took a pass from sophomore forward Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) from 20 yards out and placed it into the right side of the net in the 32nd minute. The goal gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead that held until halftime.
Senior midfielder Meagan Beasley (Longmont, Colo./Longmont) extended Pittsburgh's lead with an unassisted goal in the 76th minute. Gellatly then added an insurance goal with just two minutes remaining as she lobbed the ball over the Monarchs' backup keeper Alison Kinsler.
Old Dominion held a 23-12 shot advantage over Pittsburgh but were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
The Panthers move to 5-9-1 overall (1-4-1 Big East). Pittsburgh hosts Miami on Friday, Oct. 22, at Pitt Stadium (7:30 p.m.). The Panthers will hold a special ceremony to recognize their first graduating class prior to the start of game.
