Pittsburgh Volleyball Sweeps Duquesne

PITTSBURGH - With a strong offensive performance in game three, the Pittsburgh Panthers volleyball team completed a 3-0 sweep of crosstown-rival Duquesne tonight at the A.J. Palumbo Center.
The Panthers captured the match with a 15-6 win in the third game as they held the Dukes to negative figures and just nine kills on 35 attempts in the game. Pittsburgh, however, posted an impressive .429 hitting efficiency in the game with 18 kills on 35 attempts.
Duquesne came out strong in the first game to take a 6-1 lead, but Pittsburgh rebounded to pull the score within two at 9-7. Moments later the Panthers put together six unanswered points to take a decisive 13-9 advantage and the eventual 15-9 win. Game two saw a 15-9 Pittsburgh win and set the stage for the match victory.
Three Panthers posted double figures in kills. Freshman Tari Boutin (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) had a solid performance in the match as she led Pittsburgh with a match-high 12 kills and added nine digs and four blocks (one solo, three assists) to her effort. Also recording double-digits in kills were juniors Stacy Renick (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and Marcia Thiesen (Chatham, Ontario/John MacGregor) who had 10 apiece.
Freshman Carrie Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) also performed well with her match- high 40 assists, while adding eight digs and two block assists.
The win improves Pittsburgh record to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in the Big East.
Pittsburgh returns home this weekend when it hosts Big East Conference-foes Georgetown (Oct. 23) and Villanova (Oct. 24). Both matches are at Fitzgerald Field House and begin at 1 p.m.
