PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panthers men's soccer team shut out Cleveland State, 3-0, in a non-conference matchup Wednesday. Juniors Chad Porter (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and Ben Garry (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) combined for all three goals on the afternoon.
Porter struck first with the eventual game-winner at the 17:02 mark after taking an assist by Garry past Viking keeper Geoff Mauch. Garry then responded with a goal of his own, unassisted at 23:57, helping Pittsburgh to a 2-0 halftime lead.
Porter added an insurance goal in the second half, netting his second of the game (unassisted), and his third of the season, at 58:41. The Panthers led the shot count, 20-7. Pittsburgh netminders Justin Gaul (North Huntingdon, Pa./William Tennent) and Joe Conlan (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) combined for the shutout. Gaul had four saves in 81 minutes of play, whil Conlan had one save.
Garry led the Panthers with six shots on goal and extends his team scoring lead to 13 points with six goals (including one game-winner) and one assist.
Pittsburgh (6-7-3/1-6-2 Big East) hosts Big East Conference foe Boston College on Sunday, Oct. 31. Game time is 1 p.m. at Pitt Stadium. A special senior recognition ceremony will be held prior to the start of the game.
