PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh men's soccer team was shut out by Boston College today, 1-0, in a Big East Conference matchup at Pitt Stadium.
Forward Casey Schmidt scored the game-winner for Boston College at the 34:35 mark. The goal came on a deflection after his initial shot was blocked by a Pittsburgh defender right in front of the net.
Pittsburgh was outshot, 20-7, and had to play one man short after senior defender Jeff Dyer (McMurray, Pa./McMurray) was forced out of the game with a red card at 69:37. Junior Chad Porter (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) had three of the Panthers' seven shots, while Boston College was led by Chris Cleary with six shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Justin Gaul (North Huntingdon, Pa./William Tennent) started for the Panthers and made eight saves on the afternoon.
Pittsburgh moves to 6-8-3 overall and 1-7-2 in Big East play. The Eagles are 6-8-2 overall and 2-8 in the conference.
The Panthers remaining 1999 schedule could be slightly altered in the following days. Pittsburgh's home game versus California (Pa.), originally scheduled for Nov. 2, could be moved to Thursday, Nov. 4, if the Panthers must travel to Connecticut on Wednesday, Nov. 3, to make up a conference game that has been postponed twice. A decision is expected to be made Monday morning.
