Swimmers Fall To Virginia In Dual Meet

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh swimming and diving teams fell to Virginia in dual meet competition on Nov. 5. The ninth-ranked Cavelier men won by a score of 137-104, while the 11th-ranked women's team defeated the Panthers, 132-110. Both Pittsburgh teams are 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big East Conference.
Freshman Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) claimed two victories for the men in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, with team season-best times of 20.90 and 46.03, respectively. It was the third meet in a row in which Grube swept both sprint free events.
Senior Michael Pron (Belle Meade, N.J./Hillsborough) claimed a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:05.84. Sophomore diver Blair Beal (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) won the three-meter board with 271.875 points, and placed second on the one-meter (251.10 points).
For the women's team, senior diver Jamie Tomazich (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) won both the one- and three-meter diving competitions with scores of 277.8 and 302.62, respectively. Other individual event winners for the Panthers included senior Beth Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) in the 200 backstroke (2:03.60) and senior Nicole Palombo (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks West) in the 200 breast (2:24.70), both with season-best times.
The Pittsburgh men will host Big East foe Notre Dame on Saturday, Nov. 13 beginning at 11 a.m. at Trees Pool. The Panther women will travel to Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Nov. 12, for a tri-meet competition with Notre Dame.
