PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ricardo Greer scored a career-high 29 points and Pittsburgh improved to 4-0 by scoring more than 100 points for the first time in 125 games, defeating Norfolk State 102-78 on Wednesday.
Jeremy Holmes had a career-high 12 assists for the Panthers and sparked their motion offense against the Spartans' zone defense early on to jump out to a 21-point lead midway through the first half.
Greer, who also had 10 assists for the game, was 6 of 9 from the field in the half, including three 3-pointers. The Panthers, leading the Big East in shooting, shot 56 percent for the half and 60 for the game.
Pittsburgh, playing without three starters, had 33 assists, one shy of a school record.
The Spartans (0-4) didn't go away. A few minutes after Pittsburgh went up by 21, they hit eight of nine 3-pointers between the end of the first half and start of the second. They cut Pittsburgh's lead to 52-41 on Terrence Winston's 3-pointer two minutes into the second.
But Pittsburgh then went on a 29-9 run on 11 points from Greer and eight from Jarrett Lockhart to lead 81-50 with 9:07 to go. The Panthers didn't look back, reaching the 100-point mark on Holmes' 3-pointer with 2:51 to go.
Fill-in center Chris Seabrooks had 18 points while Lockhart finished with 19.
Damian Woolfolk led the Spartans with 19 while Terrence Winston and Maurice Howell combined for 33 points, including seven 3-pointers.
