12/20/1999
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Brandin Knight had 19 points and seven assists while Ricardo Greer added 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead Pittsburgh past Duquesne 74-56 in the annual "City Game" at the Civic Arena on Monday. It was the Panthers' second straight win over their crosstown rival.
After leading 34-29 at halftime, the Panthers (7-2) opened the second half with a 14-3 run, capped by Donatas Zavackas' 3-pointer at 15:06 and led 48-32. Duquesne came back with eight straight points and trailed 48-40 with 10:44 to go. Three points came on technical free throws by Courtney Wallace after the fouls were called on Pittsburgh coach Ben Howland and guard Ricardo Greer. Shawn Tann also added a 3-pointer.
The Dukes, who were 6 of 31 shooting in the second half, then went more than 10 minutes without a basket, scoring six points on free throws before hit another 3-pointer with 4:17 to go. Duquesne trailed 59-49. Pittsburgh was able to open the 10-point thanks in part to four three throws from Jarrett Lockhart. He hit two more with 3:04 to go to seal the win. Lockhart finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds. There were 20 fouls called in the second half.
The game marked the return of two Pitt players: Kellii Taylor and Zavackas. Taylor, who played 10 minutes without scoring, missed the first eight games because he was academically ineligible; Zavackas missed four games due to injuries in his feet. He had five points in 15 minutes.
Duquesne (3-5) had two transfer players - Simon Ogunlesi and Jamal Hunter - become eligible, as did freshman Kevin Forney.
