Pittsburgh - The Pittsburgh Panthers wrestling team upset the 13th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers tonight, 21-10, in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) action. The Panthers are ranked 26th (tied) in the country and improve their record to 11-2-1 (5-1) while the Mountaineers (5-3, 5-1)dropped their first EWL matchup of the season.
West Virginia began the team scoring at 141 pounds as ninth-ranked Whitey Chlebove won a major decision over Pittsburgh's Andy Villecco (Mickleton, Pa./Kingsway Regional), 17-6. The Panthers quickly responded by claiming the next five bouts. Senior Chad Jesko (Dunbar, Pa./Connellsville), ranked 20th in the nation at 149 pounds, won a 3-2 decision over West Virginia's Joe Carr and junior Mike Ziska (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) defeated Tom McMath, 9-4.
Senior Brian Pardini (Upper St. Clair, Pa./Upper St. Clair) claimed the 165-pound bout before perhaps the best match of the night. Seventh-ranked sophomore Nick Mengerink (Upper Sanduskey, Ohio/Carey) upset the Mountaineers' fifth-ranked Sam Kline, 5-2. Junior Brad Wood (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg- Osceola) won a pivotal 5-3 sudden victory in overtime over West Virginia's Phil Eliya at 184 pounds. It was Wood's first dual win of the season.
The Mountaineers' third-ranked 184-pounder Vertus Jones wrestled up a weight class at 197 pounds and defeated Pittsburgh's freshman Dan Stine (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury), 3-1, with a last second takedown. Heavyweight Matt Mueller (North Pathcogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) then picked up the scoring in what would be the clinching match for Pittsburgh with a 3-2 riding time advantage.
Freshman James Thornton (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) dropped the 125-pound bout before sophomore Shawn Amistade (Washinton, Pa./Trinity) completed the scoring with a 1-1 ride out victory in overtime.
The Panthers continue EWL action when they travel to Edinboro, Tuesday, Feb. 16, in a match that could determine the league's regular season title.
