Baseball Splits Pair with Georgetown

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team took on Georgetown in a Big East Conference doubleheader today at Trees Field. The Panthers dropped the first game 12-8, but claimed a 13-0 shutout in the second. They improve to 14-11 overall, 4-2 in the conference.
The Hoyas jumped out to an early 6-0 lead thru three innings in game one, before Pittsburgh put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third. A three-homerun, five-run fourth inning for Georgetown put the Hoyas up 12-2. The Panthers attempted to rally in the final innings but came up short.
Freshman Mike Gonda (Ruffs Dale, Pa./Yough) was 3-3 in the first game, while hitting his first of two homeruns on the day. Fellow freshman Brad Rea (Gibsonia, Pa./North Allegheny) smacked two out of the park. Senior Lou Melucci (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights) also added a homerun of his own, his first of the season.
Gonda continued his hitting streak in game two of the doubleheader, as he added his second homerun of the day and finished 4-5 in hitting with three runs batted in. Junior catcher Dave Hoopes (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin) hit his first homerun of the season for two RBI. Senior Chris Delsignore (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) and junior Chris Happ (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) recorded two RBI apiece, while Melucci and Rea each had one.
Senior right-hander John Schultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) earned his second win of the season. He pitched a complete game while striking out eight batters and walking one.
The Panthers return to Big East action on Saturday, April 3, when they host Villanova at Trees Field in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
