No. 22 Panthers Lose to Lock Haven

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panthers wrestling team, currently ranked 22nd in the nation, lost a close decision this week to Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) rival Lock Haven, 17-16, in dual competition. It was Pittsburgh's first loss in ten matches.
The Panthers won the first four bouts of the match, beginning at the 149-pound weight class. Senior Chad Jesko (Dunbar, Pa./Connellsville) won a decision over Lock Haven's Rob Weikel, 7-3, and junior Mika Ziska (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) defeated Brian Olenek, 3- 2 at 157 pounds. Pittsburgh's 165-pounder Kevin Johnson (Centerville, Va./Chantilly) then won a major decision, 11-3, and sophomore Nick Mengerink (Upper Sanduskey, Ohio/Carey) won a minor decision, 7-2, at 174 pounds to make the match score 13-0.
The Panthers dropped the 184-pound classification, before freshman Dan Stine (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) defeated Lock Haven's Ken Haines, 7-3, in Pittsburgh's last win of the match. Lock Haven swept the last four bouts of the night, including two major decisions at 125 and 141 pounds and a sudden victory at heavyweight, to clinch the victory. Sophomore 133-pounder Shawn Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity) lost his first dual matchup of the season after a 9-0 start.
The Panthers, now 9-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the league, return to the mat for more EWL action Tuesday, Feb. 9 when they travel to Clarion and Thursday, Feb. 11 when Pittsburgh hosts West Virginia at Fitzgerald Field House (7:30 p.m.).
