Wrestling Squad Shuts Out Virginia Tech

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panther wrestling team defeated Virginia Tech tonight, 39-0, in an Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) matchup. The Panthers, ranked 23rd in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA), improve their overall record to 8-1-1 and a perfect 3-0 in the EWL.
Pittsburgh swept all ten bouts of the night, beginning with senior Kevin Johnson (Centerville, Va./Chantilly) who won at 165 pounds with a 7-3 decision over Jeff Cies. Fifth-ranked junior Nick Mengerink (Upper Sanduskey, Ohio/Carey) claimed the 174-pound weight class with a 15-0 technical fall, before junior newcomer Greg DeBolt (Auburn, Wash./Auburn) won a 10-3 decision at 184 pounds over Virginia Tech's Damian Hamlin. Freshman Dan Stine (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) recorded his eighth major decision (12-4) of the season at 197 pounds. Stine leads the team in major decisions and currently holds an overall record of 28-8, placing him tied at third on the all-time list for most wins by a freshman.
Junior heavyweight Matt Mueller (North Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) won by forfeit before freshman James Thornton majored the Hokies' Mike Walsh at 125 pounds with a score of 9-1. Sophomore Shawn Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity) won the 133-pound bout with a 5-3 decision, making him a perfect 8-0 in dual competition.
Freshman Chris DiGuiseppe (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock) continued the scoring for the Panthers with a 6-3 win at 141 pounds before senior Chad Jesko (Dunbar, Pa./Connellsville) claimed 149 pounds with a 21-5 technical fall at the 6:27 mark. Junior Mike Ziska (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) completed the scoring for Pittsburgh with a 6-2 decision over Virginia Tech's David Inkman.
The Panthers return to the mat Sunday, Jan. 31, when they host crosstown-rival Duquesne at Fitzgerald Field House at 1 p.m.
