Panthers Fall To St. John's And Hartford
9/20/1999
PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panthers continued their month-long travel schedule over the weekend, falling to seventh- ranked Hartford, 4-0, on Sept. 18. Pittsburgh then visited Big East Conference foe St. John's in a non- divisional matchup on Sept. 19 and was defeated by the Red Storm, 2-1.
The Panthers game at Hartford, originally scheduled for Sept. 17, was postponed a day later due to the effects of Hurricane Floyd.
The Hawks used four different goal-scorers to shut out Pittsburgh. The Panthers were outshot 30-8. Hartford also had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman forward Kirstin Gellatly (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Hay) led Pittsburgh with five shots.
Junior goalkeeper Nicole Bashor (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) allowed three Hawk goals while recording four saves. Fellow junior Jen Huzvar (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) saw her first career minutes in the net after converting to goalkeeper this season. She replaced Bashor with 18:36 remaining in the game, allowing Hartford's final goal.
After a scoreless first half at St. John's, Erin Zambelli opened the scoring for the Red Storm at the 63:57 mark. Gellatly responded for the Panthers just over three minutes later on a free kick set up by senior co- captain Megan Beasley (Longmont, Colo./Longmont). St. John's clinched the win at 75:44 on a goal by Jaime Clark.
Gellatly's goal was her fourth of the season. She currently leads the team with eight points and 18 shots.
Pittsburgh moves to 2-4 overall, 0-0 in the Big East. (This is the first year of divisional play for the conference. Only games played within the division count towards final Big East standings). The Panthers return to action when they travel to conference foe Rutgers in their first Big East Mid-Atlantic Division matchup of the season on Friday, Sept. 24. Pittsburgh then visits Villanova on Sunday, Sept. 26.
