Wildcats, Schillig Post Second Straight Shutout

Villanova, Pa.--- In Big East women's soccer action on Sunday, Sept. 26, at the Villanova Soccer Stadium, the Villanova women's soccer team blanked the University of Pittsburgh, 2-0, behind the second straight shutout by sophomore goalkeeper Janel Schillig (Marlton, N.J./ Cherokee H.S.). The Wildcats' victory was their third straight and improved their record to 8-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Big East Conference.
With the game still scoreless at the 22:56 mark of the first half, senior forward Lauren Sellers (Yardley, Pa./ The Peddie School) found a wide open Kristin Dunst (Marlton, N.J./ Cherokee H.S.) on the right side of the net. The freshman blasted a shot from 10 yards out into the left corner of the goal to give Villanova a 1-0 lead. The 'Cats outshot Pittsburgh 9-5 in the first half of play, and behind two saves by Schillig, went into the half with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, the Panthers had a number of scoring opportunities, but were denied each time by Schillig. She recorded six saves in the second half of the game giving her eight overall. At the 72:56 mark, Wildcat senior forward Kathy Minnich (Wilton, Conn./ Wilton H.S.) found Sellers, who beat Pittsburgh goalie Nicole Basher with a shot into the top left corner of the net. Sellers' seventh goal of the year sealed a 2-0 win for the 'Cats.
It was the second straight outstanding game for both, Marlton, N.J., products. The Villanova shutout was the second straight for Schillig, who now has three for the season. Scoring her second straight game-winning goal was Dunst, who now is second on the team with 11 points on five goals and one assist). On defense for the Wildcats, Beth McCaffery and Stephanie Martell both played lead roles in the victory for Villanova.
Taking the loss in goal for Pittsburgh was Basher, who posted four saves on the afternoon. The Panthers fall to 2-6 overall with the loss, and 0-2 in the Big East.
Villanova will get back into action on Wednesday, Sept. 29, traveling to Piscataway, N.J., to play Rutgers at 7:00 p.m.
