Panthers Shut Out Robert Morris

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Panther men's soccer team shut out Robert Morris (2-6-1), 3-0, on Sept. 28 at Pitt Stadium. It was a night of firsts for Pittsburgh, who took a 2-0 lead in the first half. Junior defender Keith Blass (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) scored the first goal of his career at the 18:57 mark off a deflection after a Panther corner kick. Freshman midfielder Bryan Hopper (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) followed up with a goal of his on after converting a penalty kick at 27:45. It was Hopper's second goal of the year and moved him into a tie for third place in team scoring (four points).
Freshman defender Miles Dowiak (Houston, Texas/Mayde Creek) recorded his first collegiate goal at 88:15. Dowiak scored on a header from a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Andrew Light (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest). The assist gave Light his first career point.
Pittsburgh held a 19-8 shot advantage over the Colonials. Hopper led the Panthers with four, while Ben Abebe led Robert Morris with two.
Freshman goalkeeper Justin Gaul (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent) earned his third shutout of the season and recorded two saves. The Colonials' Matt Hensen had eight saves on the night.
Pittsburgh traveled to Big East foe Providence on Oct. 2, and fell to the Friars, 1-0. The Panthers dominated the shooting, 14-6, but were unable to capitalize. Providence keeper Danny Glynn was credited with nine saves on the day. Matt O'Toole scored the Friars' lone goal at the 52:12 mark. Junior forward Chad Porter (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) led Pittsburgh with three shots.
The Panthers move to 3-5-2 overall (0-4-1 Big East). Pittsburgh travels to crosstown rival Duquesne on Wednesday, Oct. 6, before returning home to host Big East foe St. John's on Saturday, Oct. 9 (1 p.m.).
