10/27/2000
St. Bonaventure, N.Y. - The Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving team (1-0) claimed a convincing 148-86 victory at St. Bonaventure in its 2000-01 season-opener.
The Panthers proved to have too much depth, winning nine of 11 events and finishing among the top two eight times.
Katie Hunter (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) and Kelli Tielking (Damascus, Md./Damascus) helped the Panthers set the tone early as members of the winning 200 medley relay team (1:49.3). Individually, Hunter won the 50 free with a time of 24.87, just ahead of freshman Jenny Livingstone's 25.07. Livingstone (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott) would go on to win the 100 free with a time of 54.72. Tielking, also a freshman, turned in a time of 1:00.31 to win the 100 fly.
Pittsburgh was particularly strong in the 200 free, taking the top three spots. Sophomore Lindsay Weaverling (Lansing, Kan./Leavenworth) won the event with a time of 1:57.11, while Karen Thibodeau (Waterloo, Ontario/Bluevale Collegiate) placed second (1:57.65) and Jaymie Van Kooten (Sewickley, Pa./Oakland Catholic) finished third (2:00.15).
In diving, freshman Jen O'Brien (Verona, Pa./North Hills) won on the one-meter board (279.98), while junior junior Moreen O'Brien (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) won the three-meter (285.98).
