Panthers Defeat Syracuse to Open Big East Competition
10/28/2000
Syracuse, N.Y. - Pittsburgh (2-0/1-0) began its Big East schedule in fine fashion with a win at Syracuse. The Panthers won the first four events, and a total of 10, on their way to a 160-79 victory.
The Panthers set the tone early by winning the initial event, the 400-medley relay. Steve Siler (Chicago, Ill./Westmont), Randy Gertenbach (El Centro, Calif./Paradise Valley), Max von Bodungen (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) and Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park) combined to post a time of 3:25.0, which should get the quartet ranked nationally in the event.
Freshman Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) followed that by cruising to a nearly 25-second win in the 1,000 free (9:29.49). Limkemann also won in impressive fashion in the 500 free with a time of 4:38.02.
Not to be out-done, Heath, who anchored the winning 400-medley relay, won a pair of individual races as well. He took top honors in the 50 free (21.45) and the 100 free (46.59).
Also having a strong outing was von Bodungen. The junior was part of two winning relay teams and won the 200 free with a time of 1:41.23.
In diving, Michael Wells (Downington, Pa./Downington) won on the three-meter board, while junior Blair Beal (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) won the one-meter competition.
