Panthers Open Big East Season With Win
10/28/2000
Syracuse, N.Y. - The University of Pittsburgh's women's swimming and diving team (2-0/1-0) had its first test, on the road no less, and passed with a 123-120 victory at Syracuse. With the lead changing hands throughout, the meet was not decided until the final relay race (400 free).
The Panthers took the top two spots in the relay, with times of 3:35.7 and 3:35.93, respectively, to clinch the win. The winning team consisted of Katie Hunter (Warren, Pa./Warren Area), Jaymie Van Kooten (Sewickley, Pa./Oakland Catholic), Carolyne Salvini (Egg Harbour Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) and Amanda Lyle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel). Lyle additionally contributed a first-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.22.
"It was nice to have two relays that fast this early in the season," said head coach Marian Cassidy Keen. "It is tough to win at Syracuse and was glad to see our girls step up."
Freshman Emily Kaszycki (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and Rubi Cisneros (Monterrey, Mexico/Monterrey) took the top two spots in the distance events to help spur the Panther victory. Kaszycki won the 1,000 free going away with a time of 10:32.84, over 20 seconds faster than Cisneros' 10:53.17. However, the 500 free came down to the wire with Kaszycki (5:10.16) just edging Cineros (5:10.42) and Lacey Hlavaka (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield), who posted a time of 5:10.65.
In diving, freshman Jen O'Brien (Verona, Pa./North Hills) won on both the one and three-meter boards.
