11/3/2000
Pittsburgh - University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team (3-0/1-0) opened its 2000-01 home schedule with a 149-91 win over North Carolina State Friday night at Trees Pool.
The Panthers opened the competition by winning each of the first five events and taking the top two spots four times.
"We knew we had to put pressure on North Carolina State early to win," said head coach Chuck Knoles. "Our guys stood up and raced, overcoming some lingering soreness from tough workouts. I was proud of our effort."
Junior Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park) had an outstanding performance in the 100 butterfly, posting a winning time of 50.88. Heath additionally served as the anchor on the winning 200 medley relay (1:34.26) as the Panthers just edged the Wolfpack contingent (1:34.95).
Like Heath, Max von Bodungen (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) also won an individual event, while playing a key role on a winning relay team. The junior cruised to a victory in the 200 free (1:40.85) and swam 1:39 for his 200 yards in the first leg of the 800 freestyle relay. His time in the relay propelled the Panthers to a 23-second win (6:45.14).
Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) contributed a pair of individual wins. The sophomore won the 50 free (20.84) and 100 free (45.84). Freshman Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) claimed a victory in the 1,650 free with a time 16:00.06.
Michael Wells (Downington, Pa./Downington) got Pittsburgh off to a good start with an impressive win on the one-meter board (290.93). Teammate Blair Beal (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) came in second with a score of 244.35.
Pittsburgh's men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool Saturday, Nov. 4, hosting North Carolina State and Rutgers in a triple dual meet. Diving begins at 10 a.m.. at Trees Pool, with swimming events starting one hour later.
