Men's Basketball Loses To Duquesne
12/21/2000
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Aaron Lovelace picked up a loose ball and laid in the game-winning basket with 2.2 seconds left as Duquesne beat Pittsburgh 71-70 in the annual City Game Thursday night at Mellon Arena.
Courtney Wallace, who scored 20 points, drove the baseline with less than 10 seconds remaining but lost the ball for Duquesne (6-6). Lovelace recovered to score the winning basket.
Pittsburgh (6-3) took a 70-68 lead with 1:25 remaining on a 3-pointer by Julius Page, who had 16 points. Ricardo Greer also had 16 points for Pittsburgh.
Lovelace made one of two free throws with 1:02 remaining to cut Pittsburgh's lead to 1.
The Dukes almost gave the game away after Lovelace's winning basket.
After a timeout, the Dukes were penalized for having six players on the court, and Page was given one free throw for the technical foul. He missed it, making the Panthers 6-for-15 from the line for the game, but Pittsburgh got to inbound the ball. Greer then overthrew senior Isaac Hawkins just past midcourt as the horn sounded.
Pittsburgh played without junior center Chris Seabrooks. He was dismissed from the team for "behavior detrimental to the program," according to a pregame press release.
Duquesne's Wayne Smith led all scorers with 25 points, while Lovelace added 11.
Hawkins had 13 points and 10 rebounds for Pittsburgh, while junior Chad Johnson added 10 points.
