6/12/2000
PITTSBURGH - Bill Weaver, a former All-American swimmer at Ohio State, has been named a men's assistant swimming coach at the University of Pittsburgh.
"Bill has achieved at the highest levels of NCAA and international competition, and has followed that up with some impressive coaching experience as well," said Pittsburgh Head Coach Chuck Knoles, the 2000 Big East Conference Men's Coach of the Year. "He gives us the depth of experience we need to be able to crack the Top 20 a bit faster than before."
"I am excited about the opportunity to coach at Pittsburgh," said Weaver. "And I look forward to this year, as well as the years to come with the mens' swimming program."
Weaver joins Pittsburgh from San Diego, Calif., where he spent the past year coaching North Coast Aquatics club team. There, he helped organize, manage and coach one of four satellite facilities. Weaver was responsible for training, leading and motivating 100 age group swimmers from age 10 through the high school level.
Prior to North Coast Aquatics, Weaver was the assistant coach for the Saint Charles High School men's swimming team for the 1997-98 season.
Additionally, Weaver has served as a freelance writer for Triathlete Magazine, writing articles on stroke and training techniques.
Weaver was an All-American swimmer at Ohio State, where he earned three Big Ten Conference championship titles. He also served as a team captain in 1994. As a member of the U.S. National Team, Weaver claimed silver medals in both the World University Games (held in Japan) and the U.S. National Swimming Championships in 1995. In addition, he was a finalist in the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials in 1996.
Weaver earned a bachelor's degree in environmental science from Ohio State in 1995.
Weaver, his wife Deborah, and their son Lain, have recently relocated from San Diego to the Pittsburgh area.
