Jamie Tomazich Receives Honor from NCAA

PITTSBURGH - Jamie Tomazich, a former All-America diver at Pittsburgh, has been honored with a $5000 postgraduate scholarship awarded by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee. Tomazich was one of 71 women honored in all divisions who maintained at least a 3.0 grade-point average and performed with distinction in varsity competition.
"Jamie has been the ideal student-athlete," said Pittsburgh Athletic Director Steve Pederson. "Our entire University is so proud of her and we look forward to following her future successes."
"We are extremely excited for Jamie," said Marian Cassidy Keen, head coach of the women's swimming and diving team. "She has been a tremendous leader on our team, and has made a definite impact, not only in the record books and in the classroom, but in the overall development of our program as well. She will truly be missed this season."
Tomazich, a native of Wexford, Pa., holds school records on both the one-meter and three-meter diving boards. The North Allegheny graduate was honored with the 2000 Blue-Gold Award, one the of the University's highest athletic honors. The award is presented annually to the male and female senior athletes who best represent the student-athlete ideal based on academic scholarship, athletic achievement, leadership qualities and citizenship.
Tomazich was a 1997 All-American on the one-meter diving board, as well as a two-time Honorable Mention All-American on both the one- (1999) and three-meter (1997) boards. A three-time NCAA qualifier, Tomazich recently placed second and third on the three- and one-meter, respectively. In addition to her Pittsburgh records, Tomazich has also broken a number of opponent's pool records.
A perennial All-Big East diver, Tomazich boasted a 3.89 cumulative grade-point average as a Spanish and education double major. She is a four-time University Scholar-Athlete and has earned Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll honors every semester. A member of the Golden Key Honor Society, Tomazich spent the summer of 1999 studying Spanish at the University of Guadalajara and plans to attend graduate school to pursue international affairs.
Tomazich was also honored as Pittsburgh's female recipient of the 1999-00 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Award for her outstanding achievement in the pool and in the classroom. She received $2,000 for the honor which will be applied to graduate studies.
Recipients of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship compete in sports in which the Association conducts championships and can use the scholarship for part-time or full-time postgraduate study at the university or professional school of their choice. The NCAA annually awards 174 postgraduate scholarships to student-athletes who have excelled academically and athletically and are in their last year of intercollegiate athletics competition.
