PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh men's swimming team, which has dominated the Big East Conference with 15 team titles, has now been honored for their academic excellance as well. The Panthers were recently selected to the 2000 College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Academic All-American Team with a combined grade-point average of 2.86.
To be considered by the CSCAA, the team must have a combined GPA of at least 2.80 (based on a 4.0 scale) for the semester, and all swimmers who competed in any competition for the team during the semester must be included in the average.
Pittsburgh ranked 30th among all Division I men's swimming teams. The Panthers were one of five teams representing the Big East, including Georgetown, Boston College, Notre Dame and Rutgers.
Pittsburgh completed its 1999-2000 season with an overall record of 7-2 and were 4-0 in the conference. The Panthers claimed its fourth straight Big East championship, while Head Coach Chuck Knoles was honored as the conference's Men's Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his career.
