Women's Soccer Falls Twice Over the Weekend
9/3/2000
The Pittsburgh women's soccer team dropped two road games over the weekend. The Panthers fell to fourth-ranked Penn State, 6-0 on Sept. 1, before losing to Bucknell, 3-0, on Sept. 3.
Pittsburgh mustered just two shots on goal against the Nittany Lions, who dominated the entire match. Penn State's first three goals came during its first six shots of the game to give the Nittany Lions a 3-0 halftime lead. Penn State added three more goals in the second half for the final score and the shutout.
Panther goalkeeper Gretchen Ross (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) saw her first action in the net after transferring to Pittsburgh from James Madison and made three saves on the night. Recording shots for the Panthers were junior forward Cande Ruiz (Oxnard, Calif./Santa Clara) and sophomore midfielder Lauren Sciocchetti (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven).
Bucknell scored three goals in three minutes during the second half to hand Pittsburgh its second shutout loss of the weekend. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Brown (Burnley, England/St. Christopher's) made 12 saves on the day for her second double-digit production of the season. Ruiz led the Panthers with five shots on goal.
Pittsburgh (1-3) returns to action on Friday, Sept. 8, when the Panthers travel to Arizona. They will then visit Arizona State on Sunday, Sept. 10.
