Men's Swimming and Diving Lose One, Win One

The Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team, ranked 15th in the country, split a pair of dual meets over the weekend, falling to Penn State on Jan. 12 and defeating West Virginia in Big East Conference action on Jan. 13.
The Panthers visited State College on Friday and fell to the Nittany Lions, 140-98. Freshman Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) claimed first place in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:29.25), while sophomore Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) and freshman Ken Shelhorse (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) placed first in the 100 free (45:16) and 200 back (1:50.10), respectively.
Pittsburgh claimed the last two events of the meet with freshman Randy Gertenbach (El Centro, Calif./Paradise Valley) finishing first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.41. The Panthers then set a new McCoy Natatorium pool record in the 400 free relay as Grube, Miah Heath (Estes Park, Colo./Estes Park), Adam Webber (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) and Max vonBodungen (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) won the event with a time of 3:00.07.
Pittsburgh claimed all but one event in defeating West Virginia, 142-91, at Trees Pool Saturday afternoon. The Panthers combined to claim first place in both relay events, while also finishing first and second in the 1000 free, 200 free, 50 free, 200 individual medley, 100 free and 200 back.
Limkemann placed first in the 1000 free (9:36.75) in his second straight meet, while Heath and Grube nabbed first in the 200 (1:40.92) and 50 free (20.41), respectively. Junior diver Michael Wells (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) finished on top of both the one- and three-meter diving boards. Other Panthers to win their events included Shelhorse, vonBodungen, Gertenbach and Steve Siler (Chicago, Ill./Westmont).
Pittsburgh moves to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big East. The Panthers will visit Maryland on Friday, Jan. 19, and Villanova on Saturday, Jan. 20.
