The Panthers won 30-18, 30-16, 30-25, for their second straight victory and 11th in their past 12 matches. Leading the way for Pittsburgh in her first start of the season was Abby Fechhelm (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah High). Fechhelm had a match-high 13 kills and hit .286. She also had a career-high five blocks, including three solo and added eight digs in the victory.
Junior Sarah Rollman (Norfolk, Neb./Norfolk) finished up a strong weekend with 11 kills and a .563 hitting percentage while playing just two games, with three assists and three blocks, in the win over the Friars (2-19, 0-4). Wendy Hatlestad (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) added 12 kills in 27 attempts with six digs and senior Carrie Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) averaged 15 assists in the three games for a total of 45 in the match. Norris recorded a double-double with 13 digs and had three blocks as well.
Freshman Kim Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) looked strong after coming into the match for Rollman in the final game. She had five kills in five attempts to keep her season hitting percentage perfect and added two assists and a dig. Providence was led by Katie Fleming, with 13 kills, seven digs, and a .250 hitting percentage. Ayana Cadres added 10 kills for the Friars, while Rachel Tucker had 28 assists.
Pittsburgh had large leads in each of the first two games but the Friars stormed back in the third game and forced Head Coach Chris Beerman to take a timeout down 18-13. After the timeout, the Panthers scored 17 of the final 24 points and won the match.
The Panthers will play their next five matches on the road beginning with a non-conference showdown with UAB in Birmingham on Oct. 18.
