10/22/2002
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? Pittsburgh's first five-game volleyball match didn't turn out as well as Head Coach Chris Beerman would have liked as the Panthers came back from a 2-0 deficit only to lose, 3-2, to UAB on Friday night.
UAB won the first two games, 30-26 and 30-27, but Pittsburgh came back to post a 31-29 win in game three and a 30-24 decision in game four. In the final game, UAB topped Pittsburgh, 15-12, to win the match.
The Panthers (15-6) were led by juniors Wendy Hatlestad (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) and Sarah Rollman (Norfolk, Neb./Norfolk) in the loss. Hatlestad had 15 kills but had 12 errors in 58 attempts. She also had eight digs and three blocks, including two solo stuffs. Rollman continued her strong play of late with a 14-kill performance with 16 digs for the double-double and four block assists.
Hatlestad's 10th kill of the match gave her 1,000 for her career, becoming just the seventh player in Panther history to reach that milestone. She now has 1,005 career kills after the UAB match.
Sophomore Megan Miller (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) also posted double-digits in kills with 12 and added five digs and eight blocks, including two solo. Senior setter Carrie Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) led Pittsburgh with 39 assists and five digs while freshman libero Megan McGrane (Muncie, Ind./Delta) was the Panthers' leader in digs with 23.
The Panthers are off until Friday, Oct. 25, when they travel to South Bend, Ind., to take on Notre Dame.
