PISCATAWAY, N.J. ?After facing a 2-0 second half deficit, Rutgers scored three unanswered goals to defeat the Pittsburgh men?s soccer team 3-2 Friday evening. Pittsburgh falls to 7-7-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the Big East while Rutgers improves to 6-6-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the Big East.
Pittsburgh jumped on top when Marco Carrizales scored on a penalty kick at the 29:16 mark. The Panthers added a second goal when Keeyan Young controlled a rebound shot and put it past the Rutgers goalkeeper for Pittsburgh?s 2-0 lead just four minutes into the second half.
But Rutgers rallied back. Rutgers had a chance to cut the lead in half when it was awarded a penalty kick in the 47th minute, but Josh Gros? shot was saved by UP?s Justin Gaul to keep the score at 2-0.
About 30 seconds following the failed penalty kick attempt, Rutgers? Scott Gahagan pounced on a through-ball in the box and chipped it past Gaul at the 47:24 mark.
Rutgers tied the game at 2-2 in the 60th minute. Started by a corner kick on the right side, Gros gained control of the ball at the top of the box, approximately eight yards outside, and sent a lofting pass into the box. Chris Karcz headed a shot over the hands of Gaul into the goal to tie the match at 2-2.
In the 73rd minute, with the match tied at 2-2, Anthony Schiavino gave the Scarlet Knights a 3-2 lead when his shot deflected into the goal.
Rutgers outshot the Panthers, 16-11, and held an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Rutgers goalkeeper Ricky Zinter stopped five shots in goal, as did Gaul.
