Blue-Gold Meet to Open Swimming Season on Friday
10/8/2002
PITTSBURGH ? Friday's Blue-Gold intrasquad scrimmage will open the 2002-03 swimming and diving season at Trees Pool. The meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
Highlighting the new season is a combined coaching staff for both the men's and women's swimming and diving staffs. Head Coach Chuck Knoles will be at the helm of both squads at the University of Pittsburgh for the first time and is concentrating on getting both teams better as quickly as possible.
On the men's side, six consecutive Big East titles and a school-record eight NCAA participants last season is motivation for the team to continue to improve on the national scene. Captains Mike Grube (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) and Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan) are returning Big East individual champions and were two of the team's representatives at last year's NCAA Championships.
Grube will head up the Blue squad while Limkemann will serve as the team captain of the Gold team for Friday's meet. The women's Blue team will be headed by co-captains Carolyne Savini (Egg Harbour Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) and senior Lacey Hlavka (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield). The Gold team will have Jenny Livingstone (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott) as its team captain.
For the meet on Friday, a swimmer may compete in no more than four events, one more than in a typical competition. Two of those four events will be designated by the coaches while the other two will be the decision of the team captains.
Putting a fun yet informative twist on things, Knoles will require that each swimmer and diver know all of the team's records as well as the words to the Alma Mater.
"We're looking forward to getting the year started," Knoles said. "We have a lot of new talent I'm eager to see in competition and we have many strong returners that we expect to step it up a notch this year."
The dual meet season begins Oct. 19 with a road meet at the University of Washington.
