Providence Defeats Men's Soccer 4-2

PITTSBURGH- Providence defeated the Pittsburgh men?s soccer team 4-2 Saturday at Founders Field. The Panthers drop to 8-8-1 overall and 2-7-1 in the Big East; while Providence improves its record to 6-10-0 overall and 4-5-0 in the Big East.
The game was extremely intense and physical. The Panthers committed 19 fouls and were charged with two yellow cards while the Friars committed 16 fouls and earned one yellow card.
Providence began the scoring early in the first half. Just 14 minutes into the contest, Providence?s Jeff Smith received a pass from teammate Johnathan Alva-Cavero. Smith put a shot past Pittsburgh goalkeeper Justin Gaul for a 1-0 lead.
Two minutes later, Providence?s Derek Nobrega broke away from the Panthers defense and was able to capitalize on Providence?s second goal of the half.
Pittsburgh came out ready to play in the second half. Three minutes into the period, freshman Keeyan Young was fouled inside the box. Marco Carrizales took the penalty kick but missed wide right.
Twenty minutes later, senior Bryan Hopper found himself in position in front of the net. A ball deflected off of a Providence defender and found its way to the foot of Hopper. Hopper booted the ball into the back of the net.
Two minutes later, Providence retaliated with a goal of its own. Anthony Petrarca fed Eoin ynch a cross which he blasted into the back of the net.
Pittsburgh came back when midfielder John Occhiuto found freshman Keeyan Young at the top of the penalty box. Young juked his defender, turned and fired a shot into the back of the net.
Providence sealed the deal when junior Jonathan Rhode crossed a ball to Eoin Lynch who scored his second goal of the game.
