AKRON, Ohio-The University of Pittsburgh baseball saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt as it fell to Akron, 14-5, Wednedsay night in a rain-soaked game. The Panthers dropped to 31-14-1 overall while the Zips improved to 17-24.
Junior Brant Colamarino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) continued his offensive slugfest as he blasted his team-leading 18th home run of the year. Colamarino, who extended his hitting streak to 23 games, is one home run shy of the Panther record held by former standout Joe Lydic, who cracked 19 home runs in 2000.
Pittsburgh fell behind 4-2 after three innings, but was able to knot the score at 4-4 after the top half of the sixth frame. However, the Zips lit up the scoreboard four times in the sixth inning, once in the seventh and five more times in the eighth inning to split the season series with Pittsburgh.
Brad Rea (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), Bryan Spamer (Harrisburg, Pa./Redlands), Chris Papst (Downington, Pa./Downington) and Scott Folmar (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) paced the Panthers with two hits apiece.
Brad Webb (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) suffered the loss on the mound, working 3.2 innings and giving up eight hits and four runs (two earned).
Pittsburgh returns to action on Thursday as it travels to city-rival Duquesne at 3 p.m. Earlier this season, the Panthers defeated the Dukes, 19-3, at Trees Field.
