Men's Soccer Falls to Bucknell 1-0
9/16/2002
Bucknell handed the No. 18 Pittsburgh men?s soccer team a 1-0 loss Monday in Lewisburg.
The loss snapped Pittsburgh?s five-game win streak and dropped the Panthers to 5-1-0 on the year. Pittsburgh broke into the NSCAA/adidas national rankings last week at No. 20 and improved to No. 18 with this week?s poll. Bucknell improves to 5-1-0 on the year.
Bucknell?s Jonathan Hemmert provided the contest?s lone goal when he sent a penalty shot past Pittsburgh goalkeeper Justin Gaul just 2:22 into the second half. Bucknell was awarded the penalty shot after a handball was called on a Pittsburgh defender on the goalline.
Pittsburgh threatened to tie the contest in the final five minutes but the Bison defense held off several scoring opportunities.
The game saw a total of 33 fouls and four yellow cards as both teams finished with 10 shots apiece. John Occhiuto led Pittsburgh with four shots while Michael Preston added two.
The Panthers are next in action at home against Big East Conference rival Connecticut Saturday at 1 p.m. All home games are played at Founders Field.
