Volleyball Wins Fifth Straight in Sweep of Duquesne

The Panthers (7-4) burst out to a big lead in game one, leading 9-2 after a 8-0 run. The Dukes (7-4) got as close as six points but lost the first game, 30-11. The second game was much closer with Duquesne leading throughout the opening points but Pittsburgh came back and took the lead to finish off the Dukes, 30-24.
Pittsburgh came through in the third game as well, scoring 15 of the final 21 points to win by a count of 30-18. The Panthers were solid on the attack with a team hitting percentage of .381 that included marks of .433 in game one and .471 in the final frame. Duquesne finished with a .068 hitting percentage and dropped its 33rd decision to Pittsburgh in 35 matches.
Junior Sarah Rollman (Norfolk, Neb./Norfolk) had a strong game offensively with 13 kills in 24 attempts with just three errors for a .417 hitting percentage. She also had five assists and four block assists to help the Panthers? defensive efforts. Also hitting double digits in kills were junior Wendy Hatlestad (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) with 12 kills and two errors in 25 attempts (.400) and sophomore Gini Ullery (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) with 11 kills in 30 attempts while committing just three errors (.267).
Sarah Morrow was the Dukes? top offensive threat with 10 kills in 27 attempts and a .259 hitting percentage. Pittsburgh setter Carrie Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) had a match-high 43 assists to give her 3,812 for her career. She is just 119 away from tying Stephanie Dufresne (1994-96) for second place on the Panthers? all-time list. Norris also had 12 digs in the match for her fifth double-double of the season and third straight. The 12 digs give her 794 for her career, moving her into 10th place on the Panthers? all-time list, past Dufresne, who had 790.
Megan Miller (Milford, Conn./Jonathon Law) had a stellar game defensively with eight total blocks (two solo) in the three games and also recorded nine kills in 17 attempts with just one error for a match-high .471 hitting percentage.
The Panthers will host the Pittsburgh Classic this weekend against George Washington, Charleston Southern and Maryland-Baltimore County. The tournament begins Friday, Sept. 20 at 4:30 p.m. and ends on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. with the Panthers taking on the Colonials of George Washington.
