Volleyball Wins Pittsburgh Classic With Sweep of George Washington

Miller (Milford, Conn./Jonathon Law) had a total of 31 kills in the two matches with just three errors in 46 attempts for an impressive .609 hitting percentage. She also added eight digs and three blocks in the Panthers? two wins. Pittsburgh topped the Retrievers in their first match on Saturday, 30-16, 28-30, 30-21, 30-14, and then knocked off George Washington, 30-22, 30-22, 30-21, to finish the tournament a perfect 3-0 and extended its winning streak to eight matches. The Panthers last won eight consecutive games from Sept. 15-30, 2000.
In the win over UMBC, sophomore Gini Ullery (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) led the Panthers with 18 kills and added six digs. Wendy Hatlestad (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) had 10 kills, two assists, three aces and eight digs. Freshman Madelyn Egan (Sandy, Utah/Brighton), who was named to the all-tournament team, had nine kills with two errors in 18 attempts for a .389 hitting percentage and added five blocks. Senior setter Carrie Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) recorded a double-double with a match-high 45 assists and 11 digs.
The Panthers swept George Washington and were led by Miller and Egan, who combined for 26 kills and just four errors in 46 attempts. Ullery and Hatlestad added nine kills apiece with Ullery recording a match-high 15 digs, along with Panther freshman Megan McGrane (Muncie, Ind./Delta). McGrane was named to the all-tournament team for her outstanding defensive work as a libero. Norris had a tournament-high 47 assists in the finale.
In the other two contests played on Saturday, George Washington topped Charleston Southern, 3-0 (30-22, 30-18, 30-24) and UMBC beat the Lady Bucs as well by a count of 3-0 (31-29, 30-19, 30-27).
Along with Miller, Egan and McGrane of the Panthers, the all-tournament team consisted of George Washington?s Lindsey Vernand and Lauren Dunning, UMBC?s Heather Hollidge, and Charleston Southern?s Allyn Beam.
Pittsburgh (10-4) will open its Big East schedule next Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House with a 5 p.m. match against Georgetown.
