9/4/2002
The University of Pittsburgh won its third consecutive game with a 1-0 victory Wednesday against Niagara at Founder?s Field. Pittsburgh improves its record to 3-0-0 while Niagara falls 0-2-0.
A Keeyan Young goal in the fifteenth minute resulted in the game winner. Bryan Hopper sent a corner kick sailing across the goal which led to a scramble in front of the net. Young finished the ball, scoring his first goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Justin Gaul recorded his third shutout of the season. Gaul made seven saves, including one that was crucial to Pittsburgh?s first-half effort. Niagara?s Simon Adair blasted a shot from 10 feet out which Gaul denied in the 10th minute of the first half. This unsuccessful opportunity deflated Niagara?s scoring chances during the remainder of the first half. Pitt out shot Niagara 12 to 8.
The game was a physical battle between both teams. The Panthers recorded 16 fouls while the Purple Eagles recorded 12.
