Duke Defeats Pittsburgh, 3-0, in First Game of Pittsburgh Volleyball Invitational

PITTSBURGH?
The Blue Devils? 30-25, 30-28, 30-24, win over the Panthers was Pittsburgh?s first home loss of the season. The Panthers (2-3) were up 5-3 in the first game but Duke went on an 11-2 run to take a seven-point advantage. Pittsburgh was able to reverse the 14-7 score and tie the game at 21-21 thanks to two service aces by Megan Miller (Milford, Conn./Jonathon Law).
Duke (5-0) fought back, however, and won nine of the final 13 points to take the first game. Pittsburgh was in command throughout most of the second game, taking an 18-14 lead before the Blue Devils called a timeout. Again, Duke came back and won the game, 30-28, and never relinquished the lead in the third game, winning 30-24 and taking the match.
Junior Wendy Hatlestad (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) had a match-high 12 kills and a .200 hitting percentage. She also registered eight digs, two blocks and two service aces. Sarah Rollman (Norfolk, Neb./Norfolk) chipped in nine kills in 40 attempts with 10 digs. Senior Carrie Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) had a match-high 30 assists and had two service aces to move past Marcia Thiesen into seventh place on the Panthers? all-time list with 105 in her career.
Duke was led by Krista Dill, who had 10 kills in 20 attempts with just two errors and Sarah Salem, who registered 11 kills with four errors in 20 attempts for a .350 hitting percentage. Stephanie Istvan, a Johnstown, Pa., native, had 26 kills to lead the Blue Devils.
In the first game, Bowling Green erased a two-game deficit and defeated the Indiana State Sycamores, 26-30, 28-30, 30-26, 30-24, 15-10. Kristin Gamby had 23 kills in 57 attempts with just four errors for a .333 hitting percentage. Susie Norris, sister of Carrie and Kim Norris of the Panthers, recorded a double-double with 19 kills and a match-high 26 digs. She aslo had a .318 hitting percentage for the match. Sara Sikorski had 48 assists to lead the Falcons (2-0), while the Sycamores? leader in assists was Kerri Byrum with a match-high 50.
Indiana State (4-1) suffered its first loss of the season but had four players with 10 or more kills, including Brittanie Stowell (17), Andrea Krouse (16), Kylee Osborne (13) and Kristin Widmar (13).
Bowling Green and Duke will meet at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning with the Sycamores taking on the Panthers at 1:30 p.m. The tournament will finish up with Duke versus Indiana State at 5 p.m. and Bowling Green meeting Pittsburgh at 7:30 p.m.
