Volleyball defeats Villanova 3-2

Seniors Wendy Hatlestad and Sarah Rollman lead Pittsburgh to 2-0 in Big East play.

VILLANOVA, PA?Overcoming a slow start, the Pittsburgh Women?s Volleyball team displayed its resiliency to defeat the Villanova Wildcats in five games by scores of 28-30, 23-30, 30-25, 30-18, and 15-12. The five game victory lifts the Panthers season record to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in Big East match play, while the loss by Villanova drops to 3-12 overall and 0-3 in the Big East.

Senior Wendy Hatlestad (Roseville, Minn./Roseville Area) led the Panthers with a match-high 25 kills in 56 attempts for a .339 hitting percentage, while adding nine digs to lead Pittsburgh to its second Big East victory of the season. Senior Sarah Rollman (Norfolk, Neb./Norfolk) chipped in 18 kills and 16 digs for Pittsburgh?s only double-double in the contest.

Junior Lindsey Macke (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) registered a match-high 50 assists, while sophomore Megan McGrane (Muncie, Ind./Delta) also recorded a match-high with 21 digs.

Katie Lanting led the Wildcats with 20 kills, while her teammate Sam Hartwell registered a team-high 19 digs in a losing effort.

The veteran Pittsburgh squad played well down the stretch of the final three games to seal the victory, getting key plays from Hatlestad and Rollman. The .324 hitting percentage in the final three games by Pittsburgh proved to be the difference in the match as the Wildcats only managed to hit .134 during the same span.

Pittsburgh continues its Big East schedule tomorrow as it travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
