Men's Swimming and Diving Wins Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 18 men?s swimming and diving team continued its winning streak last weekend at the Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. Finishing each day of competition in first place, the Panthers won the meet with a team score of 1,156.5 points. Finishing in second was host Indiana University with 895 points.
The Panthers kicked off the competition on Friday with a number of first-place finishes. Sophomore Eric Bugby (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame) placed first in the 50 freestyle. Finishing first in the 200 freestyle was senior Eric Limkemann (New Haven, Ind./Woodlan). The Panthers dominated the 200 individual medley with seniors Ken Shelhorse (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) and Randy Gertenbach (El Centro, Calif./Paradise Valley) placing first and second, respectively.
The men?s relay teams also finished at the top of the competition. The 200 freestyle relay, comprised of Bugby, and sophomores Tommy Bird (Charleston, W.Va./Capital), Jason Miller (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and Darryl Washington (Aldan, Pa./Penn Wood), finished first. Bugby, Gertenbach, Miller and Washington also placed first in the 400 medley relay. The top diver for the Panthers was senior Matthew Schwartz (Huntington, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East), finishing fourth in the competition. The team finished the night in first place with 308.5 total points.
Saturday proved to be just as successful for the men?s team. Limkemann had two first-place finishes in the 200 freestyle and the 400 individual medley. Miller placed first in the 200 butterfly and Gertenbach did the same in the 100 breaststroke. Freshman Jeff Leath (Mechanicsville, Va./New Community) finished first in the 100 meter backstroke. The 800 freestyle relay team of Washington, senior Adam Webber (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), junior Hannes Kohnke (Malmo, Sweden/Borgarskolan) and Limkemann won the event. Schwartz finished third for the Panthers in the 3-meter diving competition.
The Panthers remained competitive and dominated their last day of competition. Finishing first in the 100 freestyle was Washington and Gertenbach took first in the 200 breaststroke. The team finished out the competition in first place with a score of 1,156.5 points.
Pittsburgh will host a holiday meet from December 12-14 before returning to intercollegiate competition in January 2004.
