Women's Swimming and Diving Places Second at Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? The Pittsburgh women?s swimming and diving team came up big at this past weekend?s Indiana Invitational, finishing second behind No. 13 Indiana but ahead of nationally ranked Missouri and six other schools.
The women kicked off their weekend tournament on Friday with a first-place finish from senior Carolyne Savini (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) in the 200 individual medley. The Panthers also finished second in the 400 medley relay with a team comprised of Savini, seniors Ryan Redman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) and Kelli Tielking (Damascus, Md./Damascus), and freshman Kristin Brown (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs).
On Saturday, the Panthers continued their winning streak with two first-place finishes. Tielking took first in the 100 butterfly competition. She also contributed to a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay with teammates Andrea Shoust (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada/White Pines C & VS), Redman and Savini. Additionally, Savini broke Amy Jackson's 21-year-old school record in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:50.89 in the preliminaries Saturday morning, topping the old mark by three-hundredths of a second. Panthers freshman Marie Houghton (Frederick, Md./Urbana) finished 12th in the 3-meter diving competition and the team remained in second place overall with a total score of 508 points through two days.
Finishing off the competition was Savini with a first-place standing in the 200 backstroke in Sunday?s finals. The team finished second overall in the meet with a score of 714 points. Indiana won with a total of 838 points, followed by the Panthers, No. 23 Missouri (695), Arkansas (481), Illinois (440), Michigan State (387), Cincinnati (134), Kentucky (123-diving only) and Evansville (49).
The Panthers will host a holiday swim meet on Dec. 12-14, before returning to intercollegiate competition in January 2004.
