Former Panther Volleyball Standout Sarah Rollman Continues Career Overseas
10/5/2004
PITTSBURGH ? A recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and former volleyball standout Sarah Rollman has continued her playing career overseas in the Spanish Superlliga for the Sant Cugat team.
Sant Cugat is a small suburb of Barcelona, the capital of Spain, and the Superlliga is considered one of the best leagues of its kind in the world, comparable to leagues in Italy, Brazil and Russia. The Superlliga runs from September-April with 26 matches in the regular season before the top eight teams qualify for the playoffs. The top team in the Superlliga then qualifies for the European Championships. Last season's European Championship winner, CV Tenerife, hailed from the Spanish Superlliga.
Rollman, an outside hitter and a key player for the Sant Cugat team, is trying to make it into the top eight of the Superlliga standings and is 1-1 thus far in 2004-05, including a loss against the defending champion and first-place Tenerife squad.
"The Spanish Superlliga is a big-time league and Sarah put in the work necessary to be successful overseas," said Pittsburgh head coach Chris Beerman. "She's really in her prime now and I would expect her to make major contributions to her team like she did here."
Rollman is the first player competing in a first-division league in Beerman's nine years as a head coach at both Pittsburgh and James Madison.
