Volleyball Drops Three-Game Decision at Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. ? The Pittsburgh volleyball team lost the first-place showdown with host Notre Dame at the Joyce Center on Friday afternoon, dropping a 3-0 decision by scores of 30-25, 30-22 and 30-19.
The Panthers (19-7, 7-2 Big East) were led by junior Gini Ullery (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) with 24 kills and 10 digs for a double-double. Her 12th kill in the second game of the match gave her 1,000 for her career, the ninth Panther to break the milestone. Ullery's 72 attempts were the most in her four years with Pittsburgh.
The Fighting Irish moved to 8-1 in the conference and need to beat West Virginia on Sunday or have Syracuse lose one of its remaining two matches to clinch the No. 1 seed at next weekend's Big East Championships, held at Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House.
Notre Dame had three players in double figures in kills, led by Lauren Kelbley's 14 and got a mach-high 25 digs from Meg Henican.
Freshman Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded a double-double for the Panthers with 14 kills and 10 digs, while sophomore setter Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) chipped in five kills and eight digs to go along with her 37 assists.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday at Syracuse in their final Big East regular season matchup. Pittsburgh has already clinched one of the four berths in next week's tournament, held on Saturday and Sunday, November 20-21.
