Darrelle Revis Earns Another National Frosh Accolade

University of Pittsburgh cornerback Darrelle Revis has been named a first team Freshman All-American by The Sporting News.

This is the second such honor for Revis, an Aliquippa native and graduate of Aliquippa High. Last week he was named to the Rivals.com Freshman All-America Team.

The 6-foot, 180-pound true frosh ranks third in the Big East with 1.18 passes defended per game. He ranks 30th nationally in that category in the most recent NCAA defensive statistics report.

Revis? 11 pass breakups this year rank second at Pittsburgh. His 45 tackles are fifth on the team. He has two interceptions on the season, including his fourth-quarter pick versus West Virginia that set the stage for the Panthers? game-winning drive in the 16-13 victory.

Revis has been an impact player from the onset of his debut season. He became the first true freshman to start in an opening game for Pittsburgh?s defense since Shawntae Spencer, now of the San Francisco 49ers, accomplished the feat in 2000.

Pittsburgh accepted its first-ever Bowl Championship Series invitation Sunday and will play the Utah Utes in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1, 2005, in Tempe, Ariz. The game will be a national ABC telecast and kick off at 8:30 p.m. EST.

The Panthers finished the season in a flurry, winning six of their final seven games en route to the Big East Co-Championship and an 8-3 overall record. Pittsburgh is ranked 19th by The Associated Press and 20th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll.

Utah, champions of the Mountain West Conference, finished the season 11-0. The Utes are ranked fifth by AP and sixth in the coaches? poll.

The 2005 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl will mark the first meeting ever between Pittsburgh and Utah.
