PITTSBURGH ?
"Carolyne?s passion for life in the classroom, in her community, on the playing field and in school has enabled her to achieve her phenomenal success as an undergraduate," Head Coach Chuck Knoles said. "That success will not stop there. She will help define her generation?s ?renaissance woman?. We are very proud of her accomplishments. I am excited to see what the future holds for her. She is truly a special person."
The one-time grants of $7,500 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. There are 29 scholarships available for women and 29 for men in each of the three sports seasons. Eligibility is restricted to student-athletes at NCAA member institutions who, in their final year of athletic eligibility, have performed with distinction as members of varsity teams in the sport for which they were nominated. Nominees must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.2 (based on a 4.0 scale) and intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a part-time or full-time graduate student. The winners are selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.
Savini (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) earned four letters as a member of the Panthers? women?s swimming team and had perhaps the greatest season in the history of the program as a junior in 2002-03. She broke a total of nine school records, including six individual and three relay records and earned Honorable Mention All-America for her 11th-place standing nationally in the 200 backstroke.
This past season, Savini won her first Big East Conference title as part of the 200 medley relay team and was awarded the prestigious Blue-Gold Award last month for representing the student-athlete ideal based on academic scholarship, athletic achievement, leadership qualities and citizenship. Her name will be forever etched into the Varsity Walk between Heinz Chapel and the Cathedral of Learning on Pittsburgh?s main campus.
Savini earned a 3.57 cumulative GPA as a communications and rhetoric major at Pittsburgh and has already done extensive work with the NCAA as a member of its Leadership Conference during the 2003-04 school year, and as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The four-time Big East Academic All-Star and University Scholar-Athlete will be attending Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, for sports administration and management.
