Pitt Volleyball Keeps Streak Alive Against West Virginia

PITTSBURGH - The Panthers' volleyball team kept two streaks alive on Friday evening with a 3-1 victory over West Virginia at Fitzgerald Field House. Pitt has now won six consecutive matches to improve its overall record to 13-7 and Big East mark to 6-1. The Panthers also remained unbeaten against West Virginia with their 35th straight win in the series history.
Led by senior libero Megan McGrane (Muncie, Ind./Delta), who had a season-best 36 digs, two away from her own school record of 38. It was McGrane's fifth 30-plus dig performance in her career and first since her record 38 vs. Dayton on Sept. 25, 2004.
Outside hitters Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and Gini Ullery (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) posted double-doubles for Pitt, combining for 42 kills and 26 digs. Andreyko hit .275 with 22 kills, to go along with an assist, two service aces, 14 digs and a block. Ullery finished with 20 kills, a service ace, 12 digs and a block. Pitt also got a match-high seven blocks and nine kills from senior Ashley White (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East/Indiana).
West Virginia (13-8, 2-5 Big East) earned the game-one victory by a 30-28 score and seemed to have the momentum to go up 2-0 but the Panthers fought back for a 30-28 win of their own to tie the match up. Pitt used that comeback to fuel a 30-22 victory in game three and then another 30-28 win to take the match in four sets.
West Virginia was led by Julie Hockenson, with 14 kills, two digs and two blocks, with a .286 hitting percentage.
The Panthers will have a week off before returning to the court at No. 6 Louisville on Saturday, Oct. 22. Pitt will also face Cincinnati next weekend on Sunday before returning home against Seton Hall the following Friday.
NOTES: The teams combined for 64 attack errors...the Panthers outhit the Mountaineers, .157 to .120, in the match...Pitt led in every statistical category, including nine aces to WVU's three.
