Men's Swimming and Diving Upends St. Bonaventure

OLEAN, N.Y.-Jonathan Buchanan led the men's swimming and diving team to two first-place victories, as Pitt opened its season with a 148.5-94.5 victory over St. Bonaventure this afternoon at the Reilly Center Pool.
Buchanan (Beavercreek, OH/Beavercreek) paced the 1000 free with a time of 9:41.52 and also won the 500 free with a time of 4:45.63. Scott Shearer (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) and Jared Martin (Richmond, Va./Nova) rounded out the top-four of the 1000 free with third and fourth-place finishes, respectively.
Freshman Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) won the 200 free (1:45.18), while junior Nathan McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa./Kiski) finished in second at 1:46.34.
Veteran, Chad White (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) led the charge in the 100 fly with a 52.48 finish. Andrew Kyrejko (West Orange, N.J./The Montclair Kimberly Academy) clocked in at 53.34 for fourth and Chris Howard (Medford, N.J./Bishop Eustace Prep) was fifth (53.91) in the same event.
In the 100 free, Darryl Washington (Aldan, Pa./Penn Wood) finished ahead of the bunch with a time of 46.86, while Mansfield turned in a fourth-place effort (48.17).
The team of Jeff Leath, Washington, White and Michael Bernardi (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) combined to win the 200 medley relay (1:34.77), while Andrew Burkey (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area), B.J. Conklyn (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg), Howard and Andrew Sheaff (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) teamed to place third at 1:39.99.
Leath (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley), later swam to a 52.52 first-place finish in the 100 back.
The 200 free relay team of Bernardi, Mansfield, McCutcheon and Kyrejko also captured a first-place victory with a time of 1:26.76.
In diving action the men were the dominant team. Pitt swept both the 1M and 3M boards.
Dennis Nemtsanov (Calhoun, Ga./Robert E. Lee) won the 3M diving event and placed second in the 1M dive. Newcomer Alex Volovetski (Seffner, Fla./Armwood) made an impression with a first place diving score of 333.08 in the 1M event.
Placing in the 1M event was: Volovetski, Nemtsanov and Jeremy Stultz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills). Nemtsanov, Volovetski, Stultz and Adam Natishyn (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) were the top-four in the 3M dives.
Pitt will open conference action at Syracuse, tomorrow Oct. 29. Diving begins at 9 a.m. and the swimmers will start at 11 a.m.
