Women Sink St. Bonaventure In Season-Opener

OLEAN, N.Y.-Kathy Suida paced the women's swimming and diving team with three first-place finishes, as Pitt opened its season with a 165-78 win over St. Bonaventure this afternoon at the Reilly Center Pool.
The Panthers dominated the pool by claiming three of the top-four finishes in six events, including four events where they swept the top-three.
In the 1000 free the top-three was captured by Siuda (10:18.27), Amy Miteff (10:35.47) and Ruth Seiffert (10:45.44).
The young group of freshman Stacie Safritt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and sophomores Kelly O'Hara (Voorhees, N.J./Timber Creek) and Kimmie Baird (Upper Dublin, Pa./Upper Dublin) stole the show in the 50 free. Safritt took first when she touched the wall at 24.51, Baird finished second at 25.38 and Baird placed third at 25.79.
Suida (Waterloo, Ont./Bluvale Collegiate) and Seiffert (Boothwyn, Pa./Garnett Valley) combined for first and second-place again in the 200 IM, while Laura Rosenberg (Newtown, Pa./Newtown) came in at third (2:12.18).
Kristin Brown (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) led off the 200 free with a time of 1:50.49, while Shannon Barr (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) and Kristin Criner (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) rounded out the top five with fourth and fifth-place finishes, respectively.
Newcomer, Brittany Stevens (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr's Mill) made a splash with a win in the 100 fly (57.87), while Andrea Shoust (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./White Pines C & VA) claimed the 100 back (58.67).
The team of Brown, Jordan Wallace (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic), Shoust and Safritt won the 200 free relay (1:36.95), while O'Hara, Baird, Criner and Barr teamed and placed third at 1:40.05.
In the 200 medley relay, the team of Shoust, Karla Leite (Massapequa, N.Y./Farmingdale), Stevens and Wallace took second place, while Rosenberg, Erika Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Mader del Divino Pastor), Miteff (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) and Baird took fourth.
In diving action, Kristin Caiazzo (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley) won both the 1M and 3M events. Caiazzo scored 228.15 points in the 1M and 236.18 in the 3M.
Megan McCandless (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and Colleen Kristobak (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) rounded out the top three in the 3M with dives of 213.60 and 203.93, respectively. In the 1M it was Kristobak in third-place and McCandless taking fourth.
Pitt will stay on the road and open conference play at Syracuse, tomorrow Oct. 29. Diving begins at 9 a.m. and the swimmers will start at 11 a.m.
