PITTSBURGH - The Panthers will open their season this evening in a conference match against Bloomsburg. Pitt, ranked at the top of the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) by WrestlingReport.com, defeated the Huskies last year 24-16.
"It's the opener of the season, but also the opener of the EWL schedule," Head Coach Rande Stottlemyer said of this evening's meet. "A conference meet is always double for us. It has extra significance to it."
Pitt will face some tough competition with Bloomsburg. Exciting matches are expected at 141 pounds between Pitt's Ronald Tarquinio (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) and Bloomsburg's Brad Forbes. The Panthers' Justin Nestor (Tramsfer, Pa./Reynolds) will face Jim Bertulis at 165 pounds. Bertulis defeated Nestor last season 9-4, though both enter this season ranked in a number of polls.
At 184 pounds, Kyle Deliere (Cecil, Pa./Canon-McMillan) will compete in his first dual match against the Huskies' Nate Shirk. "I think he'll be up to the challenge," Stottlemyer said of Deliere. "He's been looking good in [practice]."
The competition is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Nelson Field House.
