Pittburgh's Track and Field Ends Regular Indoor Season

The University of Pittsburgh's women's track and field team captured third-place at Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup this weekend.

PITTSBURGH ? The University of Pittsburgh?s 20^th ranked women?s track and field team captured third-place with 95 points this weekend, Feb.11-12, at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup in State College. The Panthers faced strong competition from 11 other teams. Finishing first was Penn State with 121.5 points and two-time Big Ten champions Michigan, totaling 110 points.

Panther seniors had a big day at their final regular season meet. Amanda Walker captured a double win in shot-put and weight-throw with automatic NCAA qualifying marks of 16.55 meters and 20.71 meters. Walker threw her best marks of the season. Maureen McCandless placed first in the mile run, clocking in at 4:44.0. Lamoy Stephens took the third-place spot in long jump with another NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 6.10 meters. Tamara McGill placed fifth in the 60 meter hurdles (8.60).

Underclassmen ended the regular season with strong performances as well. Junior Marissa Dudek won the Pole Vault event marking 3.91 meters. Sophomore Krystal Epps also took first-place honors in the 600 meters with a time of 1:33.12. Sophomore Julianna Reed finished third in the 60 meters (8.57) while freshmen Shanea and Shantea Calhoun each captured the fourth and fifth-place spots in both the 60 and 200 meters.

The Big East Championships are set for this weekend, Feb. 19-20, in Syracuse, NY. The Panthers are expecting strong performances against other top competitors from the Big East.
