Baseball Drops 11-8 Decision to Coastal Carolina
2/25/2005
PITTSBURGH
Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when David Cline (Mercersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) got the Panthers started with a bunt single, later advancing to third as Ben Copeland (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) reached base on error. Cline then scored on a Peter Parise (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) single to put the Panthers on top 1-0.
Coastal Carolina responded in the bottom of the third as Keon Graves scored on a wild pitch. The Chanticleers then took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Panthers answered back by scoring two more in the top of the sixth. Dan Ford (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) got the sixth inning going with a walk. Billy Muldowney (West Chester Pa./West Chester East) then fired a two-run homer into left-field to tie the game 3-3.
In the seventh, the Panthers scored two more runs to take a 5-3 lead. Mike Zambriczki (Newton, Pa./Council Rock) doubled down the left-field line and later scored on a Copeland single to right field. Copeland advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored as Parise singled up the middle.
The Chanticleers broke the game opened, though, in the bottom of the seventh, scoring eight runs on just five hits. Pittsburgh hurlers surrendered four walks in the inning to add to the cause.
The Panthers tried to answer back, but could only score three in the top of the ninth. Jim Mayer (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) led off and doubled down the left field line. Copeland then walked and Parise singled to shortstop. They all advanced on a wild pitch, scoring Mayer. Jim Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) then singled up the middle as Parise and Copeland scored. However, it was not enough for the Panthers to reclaim the lead.
Pittsburgh?s bullpen got a workout as Coastal Carolina?s Bryon Binda picked up the win. The Panthers gave up eight hits and 11 runs as Shaun Butler (Blackhawk, Pa./Blackhawk) inherited his first loss of the season.
Parise finished with three hits to lead Pittsburgh. Negrych and Mayer added two hits apiece.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday as they battle Coastal Carolina again with first pitch set for noon.
NOTES: Pittsburgh committed four costly errors in the game...the Panthers turned two double plays while Coastal Carolina had one.
