Panthers Drop 2-1 Decision to Temple

Pittsburgh faces Temple again Saturday and Sunday.

PITTSBURGH ? The Pittsburgh baseball team suffered a 2-1 loss to Temple on Friday afternoon in Boca Raton, Florida. The Panthers drop to 5-4 on the season, while the Owls improve to 3-4.
Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when the Panthers put one run on the board. Ben Copeland (Bradford, Pa./Bradford) led them off with a walk. He then stole second and reached third on a throwing error by Temple?s catcher, Matt Lafferty, to get into scoring position. Jim Mayer (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) reached first on an error by the pitcher, Tim Foulkrod. Copeland scored thanks to a RBI sacrifice fly to left field off the bat of Jim Negrych (Buffalo, N.Y./St. Francis) giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
The Owls answered back in the top of the sixth scoring two runs. Devon Swope had a RBI single for Temple scoring Justin Cooper. Swope later scored on a wild pitch by Jeff Barnyak (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola).
Despite Pittsburgh?s efforts, they went scoreless the rest of the game and Temple went on to win it, 2-1. Dan Ford (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman), Peter Parise (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), Mike Megale (Stamford, C.T./Stamford), Sean Conley (Chippewa, Pa./Blackhawk), and Billy Muldowney (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) each had one hit during the game for the Panthers.
Temple?s starting pitcher, Foulkrod, picked up the win on the mound to improve his record to 2-0 on the year.
Pittsburgh?s Andrew Kuss (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) suffered his first loss of the season, giving him a 1-1 record. Kuss struck out six batters in 5 2/3 innings.
NOTES: Pittsburgh had four costly errors in the game while Temple had three...the Panthers turned two double plays...Pittsburgh left nine men on base and Temple left seven.
